Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of Commit, the commitments you sign, the stakes you choose, and the dispute process if something goes wrong.

01Accepting these terms

These Terms of Service are a contract between you and Cognitive Health Research LLC ("Commit," "we," "us," or "our"). By creating an account, signing a Commitment Agreement, or otherwise using the Commit application or website, you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy, our Commitment Agreement, our Charitable Giving Program disclosures, and our Stake Dispute Policy.

You consent to receive these Terms and all related notices, agreements, disclosures, and communications in electronic form. You may request a paper copy by emailing [email protected]. Withdrawal of electronic consent will not affect commitments you already signed or obligations already incurred.

In short

Use Commit, and you accept these rules. Sign a commitment, and your electronic signature counts.

02Eligibility

You must be at least 17 years old to create an account. You must be at least 18 years old, legally able to enter contracts, and authorized to use your payment method to create a commitment with a monetary stake.

The Service is intended for personal, non-commercial use. Monetary stakes are available only where supported by our payment processor and applicable platform rules. We may restrict features based on age, jurisdiction, safety considerations, or payment requirements.

03What Commit does

Commit is a behavioral accountability platform. You define real-world commitments, choose how completion is verified, and may optionally attach a stake that applies only if you miss.

Commit is not a gambling, gaming, lottery, sweepstakes, or contest service. No outcome is determined by chance. Outcomes are determined by your own real-world behavior and verification submissions. You cannot win money from Commit.

04Stakes

A stake is a self-set consequence you authorize when you sign a specific Commitment Agreement. If a monetary stake is collected, it is a service fee payable to Cognitive Health Research LLC in consideration for accountability services, including verification monitoring, scheduled enforcement, deterrence functionality, and platform operation.

A monetary stake is not a deposit, security, escrow, wager, bet, contest entry, lottery, donation, or charitable contribution by you. Stakes are not tax-deductible to you, and we do not issue tax receipts for stakes.

In short

You choose the stake before signing. It only applies if the commitment becomes a final miss under the signed agreement.

05Stake destinations

When you sign a Commitment Agreement, you may select a destination category. The labels describe how Commit may allocate net stake revenue in its voluntary Charitable Giving Program. Regardless of destination, the full collected stake is paid to Cognitive Health Research LLC as a service fee and becomes Commit's property at capture.

CommitRetained for operating and developing the Service.
CharityA disclosed portion may be included in periodic corporate giving.
Anti-charityA disclosed portion may be included in periodic corporate giving to the selected organization.
No tax receiptYour stake is not your charitable donation.

No portion of any stake is held in escrow, in trust, or in a fiduciary capacity for you, any third party, or any charitable organization.

06Stake lifecycle

When a commitment with a monetary stake reaches its deadline without accepted verification, the signed Commitment Agreement controls the exact timing. The usual flow is:

  1. Firing. Commit places a payment authorization or starts the collection flow for the stake amount and notifies you.
  2. Hold period. If a hold period is supported, the authorization is held for approximately 72 hours.
  3. Capture. At the end of the hold period, Commit captures the authorization and finalizes the charge.
  4. Dispute window. The hold period is the primary dispute window.
  5. Fallback. If your primary method fails, Commit may try a backup method, pause the affected commitment, ask you to update payment details, or deactivate that commitment after repeated failures.

07Commitment changes

Material changes to a signed commitment, including changes to deadline, verification method, stake amount, destination category, or commitment scope, require you to review a new summary and re-sign before the change takes effect.

You may cancel a commitment at any time for future occurrences. Cancellation does not retroactively cancel a stake that has already fired because the deadline already passed without verification.

08Safety rules

You may not create commitments that involve illegal acts, self-harm, harm to others, harassment, humiliation, threats, doxxing, blackmail, bullying, unsafe dieting, unsafe weight loss, medical noncompliance, dangerous physical activity, sexually explicit or exploitative content, hateful or extremist activity, or anything that violates law, public policy, platform rules, payment rules, or third-party rights.

Commit is not medical, financial, or legal advice. If a commitment involves health, fitness, sleep, diet, weight, medication, or another health-related activity, you are responsible for deciding whether it is safe for you. Commit may cancel, pause, refuse to enforce, or refund a commitment that appears unsafe, unlawful, abusive, technically unreliable, or likely to violate platform rules.

09Verification

Verification may occur through photo, video, location check-in, file upload, connected services such as Apple Health, Google Fit, or Strava, buddy verification, self-verification, or AI-assisted verification. No verification method is infallible.

By signing a Commitment Agreement, you accept the verification method you chose and agree to contest outcomes only through the appeal or dispute process available in the Service. Fraudulent or manipulated proof is a material breach of these Terms.

10Payments

Payment processing is performed by Stripe or another processor disclosed before payment. Commit never receives or stores your full card number, CVC, or full expiration data. We store processor identifiers and limited payment method details needed to operate the Service.

By adding a payment method, you authorize Cognitive Health Research LLC to charge that method for any stake you forfeit under a Commitment Agreement you have signed. You may have a primary and backup method where supported. Removing a payment method does not affect stakes that have already fired.

Optional premium subscriptions are separate from stakes and are processed through Apple's In-App Purchase system on iOS or Google Play Billing on Android where applicable. A subscription does not change stake mechanics, amounts, destinations, dispute rights, or the monetary-stake feature.

11Your content & ours

You retain ownership of content you submit, including photos, videos, text, and proof. You grant Commit a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to host, store, reproduce, display, and use that content as necessary to operate the Service, including verification, buddy review, support, safety, and product improvement on an aggregated or de-identified basis.

The Service, including software, content, designs, marks, and documentation, is owned by Cognitive Health Research LLC and its licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws.

12Account status

We may suspend, deactivate, or terminate your account where permitted by law, including for violation of these Terms, suspected fraud, abuse of the dispute process, unsafe commitments, or repeated failed stake collections on the same commitment.

You may delete your account at any time from Settings. If you have a commitment with an outstanding stake at deletion, the stake remains owed and may be collected from your payment method on file where permitted by law and the signed Commitment Agreement.

13Stake disputes

Life happens. Emergencies, illness, device failures, verification bugs, or family crises may justify reversing a stake. You should dispute a fired stake within the 72-hour hold period where that period applies.

How to dispute

  • Email [email protected].
  • Include your Commitment ID, account email, a description of what happened, and any supporting evidence.
  • We review disputes in good faith and respond by email. If approved, we cancel the authorization or issue a refund to the original payment method.

We may decline disputes that appear to be ordinary regret, repeat patterns of dispute, fake evidence, or attempts to game the system. Nothing in this policy limits non-waivable rights you may have under applicable law.

14Legal terms

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent permitted by law, Cognitive Health Research LLC disclaims warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, uninterrupted operation, error-free service, and perfect verification accuracy.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Commit is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost profits, lost data, or personal injury. Our aggregate liability under these Terms will not exceed the greater of amounts you paid us in the 12 months before the claim or US$100.

You agree to indemnify Cognitive Health Research LLC and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from claims arising out of your use of the Service, commitments you create, violation of these Terms, or violation of third-party rights.

These Terms are governed by the laws stated in the version published at the time you accept them, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Where an arbitration clause is presented in the app or a later published version, it will apply only to the extent enforceable under applicable law.

15Changes & contact

We may amend these Terms by posting a revised version in the Service and at thecommitapp.com/terms-of-service. Material changes will be highlighted. The version that governs a specific Commitment Agreement is the version in effect when you sign that Commitment Agreement, as recorded in our audit log.
