# Your future self *won't show up.* Build for that.

You are not one person with a discipline problem. You are two people who never meet, and the one who makes the plans is not the one who has to act on them.

## Two people, one goal

- **Doesn't hold · Makes the plan.** Sunday, 21:40. Rested, clear, means every word. Wants this year to go differently. Power: none. It can only write things down.
- **Holds · Makes the decision.** Wednesday, 06:04. Wrecked, cold, was not consulted. Wants eleven more minutes. Power: total. It gets the final say, every time.

The one who cares does all the planning. The one who's tired does all the deciding. No amount of wanting it more changes who is in the room at 06:04.

## The skip never arrives as a decision

- You have started this same thing at least three times.
- You have never once broken the promise on the night you made it.
- The skip arrives as a schedule change, not a cancellation. After work, not never.
- There was no moment you quit. You kept not starting until stopping was already true.
- Nobody found out. Which is most of the reason it keeps working.

Every one of those is a renegotiation. The decision was already made; the miss happens because it got reopened, by someone with a strong motive and an audience of one.

## Three things the mechanism needs

- **A · Terms fixed early.** What counts as done, and by when, written while you are still the person who cares. A vague plan is just permission to argue about it later.
- **B · A check you don't control.** Something outside your own head decides whether it happened. Self-reported means 06:04-you is the defendant and the judge.
- **C · A cost you chose in advance.** Backing out has to cost something the clear-headed version picked. Not a punishment. Just a reason for the tired one to take the plan seriously.

The effect is modest, and durable: terms set once still worked a year later, which is not something a burst of motivation does. The trial behind that (https://thecommitapp.com/commitment-device/) is worth reading before you trust any bigger number.

## What that looks like on a Wednesday

1. **Decide once.** One sentence, written while you still mean it: what, when, and how you'll prove it. In Commit you type it like a text and sign it in your own handwriting.
2. **Name the proof.** A photo, a GPS check-in, an Apple Health reading, a Screen Time reading — captured live in the app, not pulled from your camera roll. There is no box to tick.
3. **Name who sees it.** The people you chose approve or reject it, and a shared commitment moves one group streak everybody is watching. Quitting in private is easy. This isn't private.

You also pick what a miss costs: nothing but the streak, the apps you chose blocked, screen time you earn back with pushups, or money. Pick the smallest one that would actually change your Wednesday.

You will have a genuinely bad day, and a mechanism that can't survive one is useless. There is a 30-minute window past the deadline, then several hours more, and ten grace tokens that mark a day skipped instead of missed.

> Sunday doesn't get a vote on Wednesday. That is the whole failure, and it is fixable.

## Common questions

### Isn't this just willpower with extra steps?

The opposite. Willpower is what you spend holding a door shut that could have been locked in advance. The aim is to have nothing left to decide at 06:04.

### What if the goal was never really mine?

Worth checking before you blame your discipline. People tend to follow through fine on things they actually want, so a habit that collapses at the first test is sometimes someone else's goal. No mechanism fixes that one.

### Do I have to put money on it?

No. “No stake, just streak” is a complete commitment where a miss costs nothing but momentum. Money is one option of four, $1 to $500, charged only on a day you actually miss, with a 72-hour hold before it is collected so there is time to appeal.

### Will it remind me at 6am?

No. There is no reminder scheduler at all. Every notification is triggered by something happening — someone reviewed your proof, someone nudged you, a token was earned. Commit doesn't nag you; your friends do.

### Commit is in public beta

Commit is in public beta on iPhone through TestFlight, free while in beta. It is not on the App Store, so there is no download link we could give you today that would work. Android is planned.

Prefer the small print first? Read the Commitment Agreement, which is the actual contract you would sign, or start with what a commitment device is.
